Children die after car veers into dam
Two children are dead and four people have been injured after a car crashed into a dam near Beaudesert, southwest of Brisbane.
Two children, aged five and 13, are dead and four people have been injured after a car crashed into a dam near Beaudesert, southwest of Brisbane.
Police said the Land Rover Discovery crossed on to the wrong side of the road and broke through a barrier on Sunday afternoon.
It then rolled down an embankment before flipping on to its roof in Wyaralong Dam.
Passers-by helped pull people out of the car, including two off-duty doctors and an off-duty paramedic.
Two children died at the scene, and another child was flown to hospital in a critical condition.
A one-year-old was treated on-site while two adults, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 20s, were taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for assessment.
“It’s a tragic and confronting scene,” Queensland Police Inspector Douglas McDonald said.
“It’s relatively shallow. The vehicle is on its roof. The wheels can be seen above water.
“It’s absolutely tragic for the family.”
Three rescue helicopters and more than a dozen emergency vehicles were called to the dam.
One police vehicle flipped as it rushed to the scene, but no officers were hurt.
The accident happened off Beaudesert Boonah Road near the Overflow Estate Winery.
Queensland Ambulance Service’s Mark Nugent told ABC News the actions of passers-by helped save lives.
“The six-month-old was removed from the water,” he said. “The emergency response was exceptionally good.”
Police are still investigating into the circumstances which led to the crash.
