Police shoot ‘lunging’ knifeman at train station
A man was shot in the stomach in Sydney yesterday after launching at police with a knife.
A critical-incident investigation has been launched after a man was shot in the stomach by police when he lunged at them with a knife at Campbelltown train station in Sydney yesterday.
The man in his 30s produced a knife while speaking to police shortly after 2.45pm at the station in the city’s southwest.
After failing to comply with requests to hand over the weapon, he was tasered by police before being shot.
NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner Peter Thurtell said the man was acting suspiciously when four uniformed officers approached him.
“They went to confront this male and he produced a knife,” he said. “A short time later police fired a Taser, which was ineffective. He again came at police with a knife described to me as about 30cm … and a single shot was fired.”
The man was taken to Liverpool Hospital with a gunshot wound to his stomach, after four ambulance crews, including a special medical team, attended the scene.
He remains under police guard in a serious but stable condition.
The train station was cordoned off last night as police inspected the scene after the major operation, which caused significant traffic delays.
