A video has emerged of South Australian volunteer firefighters escaping a raging inferno on Kangaroo Island earlier this month.
Kingscote Country Fire Service brigade member Mark Harte was travelling in a convoy of fire trucks through the Flinders Chase National Park on January 3 – which more closely resembled the depths of hell – when a huge fire ignited by lightning swept past them.
The team scrambled to affix fire curtains to the windows of their truck and released additional oxygen to the driver.
Sprinkler systems were initiated and the driver of the vehicle braced himself as the emanating heat of roaring fires enclosing them began to cause physical pain.
“I’m all right, I’m all right,” he exclaimed.
“We’ve got no choice, we’ve got to get through this,” said one of the volunteers as flames nearly blanketed the windshield.
A fire crew in front of them warned: “You’re going to get hit with the front, drop your fire curtains just leave the front open, just keep following us, all good, just keep following us.”
Flying embers and debris slammed the truck as the vehicle behind urged the crew to “keep pushing through”.
“Keep on going guys, we’re doing a f*cking good job,” said a convoy member over the radio as the truck came through the other side of the blaze and the video cut out.
The crew managed to reach a save haven a few hundred metres down the road.
The Kangaroo Island fires have burnt almost half of the island, killed two people and destroyed at least 60 homes.
