Interior maestro Steve Cordony unveils his top furniture fair finds
The interiors aficionado shares his top picks from Milan’s Salone del Mobile 2024, including design-world superstars, luxury fashion giants and Australian talent showing the world how it’s done.

1. Gucci
Gucci unveiled its Design Ancora – the reimagining of furniture classics in a rich burgundy red named Rosso Ancora – at the house’s Via Monte Napoleone flagship. Pieces to receive the Rosso makeover included the Storet storage cabinet designed by Nanda Vigo for Acerbis. Gucci.com
2. Loewe
The design house used the historic Palazzo Citterio to stage Loewe Lights, a presentation of 24 lamps created by 24 international artists. The exhibition offered unexpected interactions with light and featured materials ranging from horsehair to onyx and metal, Japanese washi paper and bamboo. Loewe.com
3. Fendi
The Fendi Casa store opposite Teatro alla Scala was the venue for the presentation of the brand’s latest collection under the vision of creative director Silvia Venturini Fendi. Homewares revolved around raw materials, bespoke workmanship and authenticity, all the way down to its barware (above). Fendi.com
4. Maxalto
The elegant Maxalto studio, established in 1975 as an extension of B&B Italia, presented its 2024 designs co-ordinated by Antonio Citterio at its Via Durini store. For Milan 2024 Maxalto built on its timeless, unique pieces with a collection that pairs new forms and techniques such as the diecast aluminium and hammered mirror steel Soleide series. 5. Hermès
The Topography of Matter paired Hermès’s heritage with modern technique. The exhibit was staged in a room bathed in darkness, forcing guests’ focus to the floor, where a tapestry of intricate patterns and raw materials were revealed. 6. CC-tapis
Patricia Urquiola, who both studied and started her design career in Milan, is a Salone doyenne. She presented numerous new designs and products during the week, including the playful and romantic m’ama non m’ama rug (left) for CC-tapis. Mobilia.com.au
7. Technogym
Technogym’s legendary fitness bench got the designer treatment as part of celebrations for the Italian brand’s 40th anniversary. Forty big names in art and design, including Nendo, Patricia Urquiola, Rolf Sachs, Piero Lissoni and Gadigal artist Kate Constantine (Konstantina) reinterpreted the bench’s design, with the works forming Technogym’s Design to Move exhibition in Milan. Fifteen of these reimagined benches will be auctioned by Sotheby’s later this year. Technogym.com
8. Armani/Casa
Echoes from the World, the latest Armani/Casa collection, was presented at Milan’s magnificent Palazzo Orsini, the grand home of the Armani brand. Guests were taken on a cinematic tour through places, cultures and techniques that have inspired Mr Armani, roaming from Europe and Japan to China, Arabia and Morocco. Pieces from the designer’s private collection were used to enhance each vignette. Giorgioarmani.com
9. Christopher Boots
Melbourne-based industrial design studio Christopher Boots presented a stunning new collection entitled Crux (pictured below), inspired by the Southern Cross constellation. This new release is in keeping with Boots’s mythical and transcendent design ethos. Christopherboots.com
10. Flack Studio
Me and You is a collaborative creation by two Melbourne design powerhouses – Flack Studio and Volker Haug Studio – that made its debut at Milan 2024. The collaboration’s collection of decorative light fixtures not only serve as a source of light but as a piece of striking sculpture for the home. Volkerhaug.com
