November 2020 is promising to be an exciting month as far as new-release TV shows, movies and documentaries. With subject matter ranging from The Reagans and Princess Diana to Joe Exotic and a family of ‘hillbillies’, strap yourself in for some wild watching across Netflix, Stan, Foxtel and Binge.

The Reagans

This four-part Showtime Original documentary re-examines the Reagans we thought we knew. The series’ creator, Matt Tyrnauer has previously made subjects of fashion designer Valentino Garavani and lawyer Roy Cohn (two more dissimilar figures, we couldn’t imagine) and has since turned his attention to the polarising couple, with a special focus on the way Nancy was — and largely still is — underestimated by the public and those around her.

Surviving Joe Exotic

We were simultaneously horrified and compelled by the singular figure of Joe Exotic when Tiger King burst onto screens earlier this year, and now a new show promises to shed further light on the infamous zookeeper, prolific animal breeder and convicted felon. It features interviews with ex-employees of his zoo, along with footage from one of the last formal interviews Exotic undertook before his arrest in April for an array of crimes, including animal abuse and murder-for-hire.

The Comedy Store season finale

This behind-the-scenes look at famed Los Angeles comedy spot, The Comedy Store, has been dropping new episodes weekly, and now the season finale will air November 1. Chronicling the club’s early days, challenges, and the comedians it helped platform and essentially propel to stardom, the five-part docuseries features interviews with the A-Z of modern-day comedy (think: David Letterman, Jay Leno, Chris Rock, Joe Rogen, Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Marc Maron and Bill Burr).

Moonbase 8

Starring funny guys Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!) and Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as budding astronauts, this comedy follows the trio as they prepare to qualify for their first moon mission, along the way being forced to question their sanity, each other, and ultimately their preparedness for space.

Rebuilding Paradise

Selected for this year’s Sundance competition, this National Geographic documentary pieces together footage to chart the devastating firestorm that engulfed the Californian city of Paradise on November 8, 2019 — and became the deadliest US fire in a century. By the time it was out, 85 people had died, 50,000 more had been displaced, and only 5 per cent of the town’s buildings remained standing. Directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13), the film charts the complicated road to recovery — and starkly echoes what we face in the wake of catastrophic fires on home soil.

A Hidden Life

This Terrence Malik flick — starring Matthias Schoenaerts, August Diehl and Valerie Pachner — is based on the true story of Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter, sentenced to death for his heroic refusal to serve for the Nazis in World War II.

The Crown season 4

The highly anticipated next instalment of The Crown sees Olivia Colman resume her role as Queen Liz, while Gillian Anderson joins as none other than Margaret Thatcher. Another notable addition is Princess Diana, played by British newcomer Emma Corrin opposite Josh O’Connor’s Charles. In August it was announced that Australian Elizabeth Debicki will take up the role of Diana for seasons 5 and 6.

Hillbilly Elegy

Glenn Close and Amy Adams star in this touching film based on the New York Times bestseller ‘Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis’, a searing sociopolitical study-cum-autobiographical tale by writer and Yale graduate J. D.Vance, based on his experience of life in America’s poor Rust Belt.
