What they’re wearing on the Grammy Awards red carpet
From vintage flexes to hidden messages, this year’s Grammy Awards had much to analyse.
When it comes to fashion at the Grammy Awards, the general expectation is that absolutely anything goes. It’s a given that for musicians, showmanship is part of the deal. This is as relevant for Cardi-B playing the role of Botticelli’s Venus in vintage Mugler as it is Cher’s butterfly crop top in 1974 and Jennifer Lopez in that plunging green Versace dress that is said to have signalled the invention of Google Image Search.
For the 66th edition of the awards showmanship was in full swing, with the likes of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo all in attendance.
This year however it was a little less outre and a touch more sparkle, but it’s safe to say the Grammy red carpet is always its own entity. Even when key trends included corset dresses, plenty of sparkle and a colour palette of red, black and beige.
The presence of Taylor Swift will always lead to intense scrutiny of her outfit for ‘clues’ by diehard ‘Swifties,’ so what to make of her decision to wear a bejewelled watch as a choker? Time is of the essence!
The megastar – who is currently in the midst of her genre-redefining Eras tour (and similarly over-analysed romance with football star Travis Kelce) – up for six nominations, opted for a white corset couture gown from French surrealist fashion house Schiaparelli. She finished the look with black opera gloves and her signature red lipstick.
Another Easter egg? Lana Del Rey channeling country singer Loretta Lynn with her puffy sleeved dress that she sourced herself. As Vogue US noted, Del Rey – who recently covered Take Me Home, Country Roads and hasan impending country album, Lasso, is entering a new era of personal style.
Speaking of red, Australian icon Kylie Minogue — who won her first Grammy award in 20 years – was a knockout in a glamorous laced bodice and chiffon gown from Dolce & Gabbana complete with a train for making a memorable exit.
Indeed red has been big on the red carpet circuit this season and was also worn by Laverne Cox whose kinky dress featured belt, latex and corset detailing.
It wouldn’t be the Grammy Awards without some serious bling, and plenty of attendees went full encrusted.
This includes Dua Lipa in a plunging custom Courreges silver chain mail dress that shimmered as she walked, complete with incredible Tiffany & Co. jewellery and hip cut-outs. Miley Cyrus was daring and spangled in a gleaming Maison Margiela fashioned from what looked like fishnet and safety pins. Halle Bailey redefined the ‘naked dress’ in glitzy Gucci and Janelle Monae was the embodiment of glamour in a strapless black sequined gown. Spangles were also worn by Paris Hilton, in aquamarine sequins.
Co-ordinated outfits on the red carpet is another key Grammy fashion bingo card moment – think Destiny’s Child in 2001 and Haim in all sky blue in 2021. This year Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus (aka Boygenius) carried the tradition forward in custom white Thom Browne suits. Billie Eilish kept to her signature style, wearing oversized trousers with a white shirt and tie, complete with a “Barbie’ emblazoned bomber jacket. Ed Sheeran too did his own thing in a camo inspired look.
It was brilliant to see some of the edge you expect at the Grammy Awards, with singer Caroline Polachek opting for a vintage Olivier Theyskens black dress with dramatic red slash detail at the shoulder from the designer’s autumn/winter ’98/’99 collection. Olivia Rodrigo was another star to choose vintage – a move that is increasingly becoming an ultimate red carpet flex – wearing a sparkling ivory dress with pink diamantés from Versace’s spring/summer 95 collection.
On the opposite end of the drama scale, Doja Cat was remarkably more subdued than her latest appearances (including as an actual cat at last year’s Met Gala) opting instead for an ethereal beige strapless corseted dress.
Meanwhile, date night was celebrated by John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen – whose leg-baring Alexandre Vauthier dress was positively in bloom with an oversized pink rose ruffle. Roses have been a key trend the past few seasons and as Teigen proves, suitable for a red carpet moment too- and especially a Grammy Awards one.
