Everything they’re wearing on the Emmys red carpet
Fiery shades of red, plenty of sparkle and little details shone.
If it feels like it’s been a veritable red carpet feast of late you’d be correct. The 75th Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles on Tuesday, following a four-month rain check thanks to the SAG-AFTRA strike. This meant the Emmys were on the tail of the Critic’s Choice Awards, held January 15 and the Golden Globes, on January 8. What’s more, the celebrities - perhaps feeling a pent-up need to really dress-up - have been bringing their A game.
While the Critic’s Choice and Golden Globes awards offered a pleasing glimmer of true personal style amid the usual slew of mermaid tail gowns and tuxedos, with the likes of Past Lives’s Greta Lee in glittering tailoring from Loewe’s menswear and Saltburn’s Rosamund Pike in kookily dramatic black lace Dior with a towering cocktail headpiece from milliner Philip Treacy, the Emmys played it a little more strait-laced. This year there was plenty of sparkle, florals, fringing, bold red hues and sharp suits on the red carpet for TV’s night of nights.
Which is to say, that all of this can make for some serious va va voom.
Take Sarah Snook. Fresh from cleaning up at the Critic’s Choice and Golden Globes Snook shook off the ‘quiet luxury’ neutral tones of her Succession character Shiv Roy’s wardrobe with her old Hollywood glamour Vivienne Westwood gown in deep blood red (a note of symbolism in the colour perhaps too?). She finished her look with an incredible suite of high jewellery from Cartier, including earrings, necklace and bracelet of white gold and diamonds, a Cartier High Jewellery necklace with white gold, diamonds, emeralds and a Cartier Maillon Panthère ring.
Red, a key hue from recent runways - including Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Prada- was a trend on the night.
A pregnant Suki Waterhouse was a total maternity-style busting knockout in belly-bearing fire engine Valentino replete with a full ball gown skirt and bow. Meanwhile Juliette Lewis opted for an oxblood shimmering column dress with necktie and The White Lotus’s Meaghan Fahy (who received her first Emmy nod alongside her co-stars Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Simona Tabasco) wore a custom strapless column dress with crystal embellished velvet rosette detail at the neckline from Giorgio Armani Privé. Daisy & The Six star Camila Morrone was pure ‘90s minimalist bombshell in a Versace dress that recalled Morrone’s friend Jennifer Lawrence’s 2011 Oscars dress. A bouncy bodacious blow-dry completed the look.
Indeed the full spectrum of red was on show, with lush and lush burgundy featured too with Elizabeth Debicki in velvet Dior dress and Rachel Brosnahan’s burgundy Versace corseted number.
Natasha Lyonne, up for best actress in a comedy series for Poker Face, continues to prove her fashion daring with another look from surrealist luxury fashion house Schiaparelli following her dagger-like scale-y Golden Globes ensemble. For the Emmy Awards Lyonne opted for a molten silver beaded dress with flower detail breast plates. Another fashion star unafraid to take some risks is The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, this time choosing a lush strapless leather dress from Louis Vuitton. It follows a series of fashion forward looks including Loewe’s ‘balloon’ dress and the incredible custom Prada gown with tulle train she wore to the Golden Globes. Another fashion forward look was from White Lotus star Aubrey Plaza with her lemon Loewe dress replete with giant pin.
A little sparkle never goes astray of course and celebrities such as Jessica Chastain, in shimmering chartreuse Gucci (Padma Lakshmi, nominated in multiple categories for Top Chef and Taste the Nation also opted for this very particular shade of green).
Selena Gomez shone in a dramatically sexy scalloped neckline Oscar de la Renta gown with some 450, 000 sequins. Meanwhile Netflix star Jenna Ortega was a vision in an ethereal Dior Haute Couture strapless ball gown embellished with pink and green floral appliqué and so too Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddington, with a trail of tulle and shimmer. Insecure star Issa Rae all but took flight in a feathery, shimmering confection by Pamela Rolland. As she told a red carpet reporter of her look, “We have a pearl moment. We have a bit of sequins. Just bedazzled. I felt like I wanted to give a little drama, you know.” Indeed.
The body was flaunted on the red carpet in others way too, while the naked dress - the long-time favourite silhouette of many a red carpet was not quite so prevalent, visible bras were worn by style icon Jenna Lyons (the surprise and undisputed star of The Real Housewives of New York) and Kathryn Hahn, while Ariana DeBose wore a bra under jacket. Rather more demure sheer looks were also worn by fan favourite, The White Lotus’s Jennifer Coolidge - who picked up the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award- and Riley Keogh, star of Daisy Jones & The Six, in a floor length sheer mesh overlay dress from Chanel. Keogh attended the Emmy Awards with her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, who was similarly elegant in black Chanel.
Speaking of the body beautiful, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White - fresh from flustering the entire internet with his provocative Calvin Klein underwear campaign- picked up his first Emmy to his trophy case, for best actor in a comedy, in a crisp and classic in a white Giorgio Armani double-breasted blazer and little black bow tie. Classic looks were the general order for the menfolk this year. It’s a never fail choice of course but a little disappointing following the braver choices from the likes of Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan on recent red carpets and the sheer Calvin Klein blouse Allen White wore to the Golden Globes. That said, Donald Glover was perfectly charming with the floral detail on his plush Bode velvet suit and Cartier jewellery (including a Cartier Tank Louis watch and Panthère de Cartier ring) and indeed it was heartening to see men continue to embrace accessorising with little flourishes such as the sparkling brooches worn by Colman Domingo and Lee Sung Jin. Proof that a stand-out red carpet outfit will always come down to the little details.
