The best Princess Kate photoshop fail memes
The Palace’s suggestion that the Princess of Wales is noodling around on Canva during her recovery from surgery did little to dispel lingering questions about the nature of her condition, but it did birth some cracker memes.
Pity poor Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown. The past 24 hours on social media have made for more royal intrigue than the last three seasons of Netflix drama combined.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, released a statement on Monday apologising for having doctored a photograph of herself with her three children for a Mother’s Day post that circulated on social news sites and social media.
The image, taken by the Prince of Wales, and signed “C” was the first official photo of Kate since before she underwent planned abdominal surgery two months ago.
For weeks now, X, the website formerly known as Twitter, has been ablaze with rumours, ludicrous conspiracy theories, and general tomfoolery about the princess: Catherine has run away, she has taken a lover, she has undergone BBL surgery, she is a contestant on The Masked Singer, she has cut regrettable bangs, she landed a plum role in the Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience, and so on. The photo was presumably intended to snuff out social media speculation about the Princess’s wellbeing, but it backfired spectacularly.

In the hours after the Mother’s Day portrait was posted, the biggest photo agencies in the world issued a rare “kill notice” to recall the supplied Royal Picture, citing suspicions that it had been photoshopped. Reuters and the Associated Press reportedly pointed to an area where Prince Charlotte’s hand seems not to line up with her sweater sleeve, and Agence France-Presse’s photo director, who called the doctoring “very amateurish,” told the The independent that Kate’s face, sweater, and hair looked off; Prince Louis and George’s sweaters both showed signs of alterations; and Charlotte’s skirt was misaligned, with apparent alterations to her hair.
The Australian’s own picture editor, Milan Scepanovic, cast his eye over the picture and identified nine issues he has with the photo that “fail on a number of truths.”
In the wake of the surrounding social media storm, Kensington Palace left to it to Catherine to explain what happened. A message on Kate and William’s official Twitter account, signed “C” and purporting to be from Kate, said, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day.”
