The Australian’s 50 Best Photos of 2024

From the US election to the Paris Olympics, from natural disasters to wars, and from tragedies to triumphs, as well as the 60th Anniversary of The Australian, 2024 was the best of times and worst of times.

Our annual retrospective reflects the diverse fortunes of people here and abroad as Australians shared the sorrow of those caught in natural disasters and the victims of wars and grappled with the trauma of civil unrest. The US election held us – and the world – spellbound and we wondered at its implications for our economy, already below par as cost of living rises left many families struggling.

Bright spots included melanoma researchers Richard Scolyer and Georgina Long becoming Australians of the Year, a very successful Olympic Games in Paris, the phenomenon that was the Taylor Swift stadium concerts and a nod to one of our most enchanting and successful exports, as Bluey starred in New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Australian’s 60th anniversary was a celebration of our land and its stories and we were honoured to have journalist Cheng Lei join us after her wrongful detention in a Chinese jail for 1184 days.
