The 2024 Met Gala theme is here
Australian star Chris Hemsworth will co-chair the annual fundraiser alongside Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Anna Wintour.
The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced its next exhibition, and with that comes the 2024 Met Gala theme: “The Garden of Time.”
This year’s Met Gala, always held on the first Monday in May, will take place on May 6. Australian star Chris Hemsworth will co-chair the party alongside actors Zendaya, musicians Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, welcoming A-listers to the museum for the exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
According to an announcement from the museum, the exhibition will feature 250 pieces from the archives of the Costume Institute deemed “sleeping beauties,” that is, pieces that are too fragile to ever be worn again.
Expect original designs from the likes of Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hubert de Givenchy to be showcased, along with an Elizabethan bodice and an 1887 silk ball gown by Charles Frederick Worth.
The exhibition will also delve into the process of garment preservation, using technologies like artificial intelligence and video animation.
What is the Met Gala?
Aside from being the biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala, which serves as the opening night of the Costume Institute’s annual blockbuster show, is a black-tie benefit to raise money for the costume wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The once routine charity gala was transformed in 1999 by Wintour into a dazzling celebrity spectacle. The ball raises millions for the Costume Institute through the sale of tickets, bought by designers and brands. Tickets cost around US $35,000 each, with tables ranging from US $200,000 to US $300,000.
What is the theme?
Each Met Gala is themed to the exhibition. The official theme for the party is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by a dark fairytale of the same name written by the British author J.G. Ballard in 1962. This year’s show will, according to The Met, “explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion.”
Who will be there?
We already know that Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Anna Wintour will be there, but we won’t find out who else will show up until they’re traipsing the steps of The Met — as the guest-list is guarded with the utmost secrecy. Designers typically arrive with famous dates, many of whom happen to be brand ambassadors — think Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie for Chanel.
This year, TikTok will sponsor the event for the first time, as well as the LVMH-owned fashion label Loewe.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew and Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson will serve as the Gala’s honorary chairs.
