WHAT is it?

A machine for vacuum-packing food at home.

Why would you do that?
Because it dramatically extends the shelf life of fresh goods - up to five times longer, Breville says. Plus, it makes your pantry feel like a walk-in deli.

How does it work?
You put food into one of the plastic bags (20cmx30cm) provided, then feed the open end into the machine; it sucks out the air and heat-seals the bag.

That sounds like fun.
It is, actually. Once you've had a go with food, it's tempting to start vacuum-packing all sorts of household objects. The bags are $20 for a 25-pack.

Other applications?
It can be used to prepare food for sous vide cooking. It would also make a thoughtful gift for someone with OCD tendencies.

Price: $130, breville.com.au
