Gong for Yabby Lake

CRIKEY! A pinot noir has won the Jimmy Watson Trophy - the first time in the gong's half-century history it hasn't been awarded to a wine made from cabernet or shiraz.
So what does the Yabby Lake 2012 Block 1 from the Mornington Peninsula (released this week for $95 a bottle) taste like? Surprisingly subtle and refined: I expected the wine to leap out of the glass, desperate to attract a judge's attention, but instead it delivers its charms in the mouth, as a seductive, intensely dark-fruited, seamless presence on the tongue.
