Uni of Newcastle’s Craig Simmons is new SA chief scientist
University of Newcastle groundwater expert Craig Simmons has been appointed to be SA’s new chief scientist.
University of Newcastle groundwater expert Craig Simmons, just appointed as the new South Australian chief scientist, says innovators, researchers, academics, government and communities need to work together to create a brighter future.
Professor Simmons, who will take on the role part time for a three-year term, will continue in his role as pro vice-chancellor of Newcastle University’s college of engineering, science and environment.
Professor Simmons is originally from South Australia and in 2015 was named SA Scientist of the Year when he worked at Flinders University and had established the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training.
He said the world was currently “on the threshold of energy, climate and health revolutions”.
Newcastle University vice-chancellor Alex Zelinsky said Professor Simmons’s appointment was testament to his outstanding expertise. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him,” Professor Zelinsky said.
