Deakin University has chosen former UNSW deputy vice-chancellorIain Martinas its next vice-chancellor, to replace Jane den Hollander when she moves on in May next year.

Professor Martin has “a leadership style and personal values that we believe are what Deakin need and wants”, said Deakin chancellor John Stanhope said.

“It’s a continuation of the current vice-chancellor’s values.”

Mr Stanhope, a former chief financial officer of Telstra and chairman of Australia Post, praised Professor Martin for his advocacy of teaching the skills needed for future jobs such as creativity, communication, problem solving and critical thinking.

He said Professor Martin was also strong on putting the university’s customers — that is students and their parents, as well as employers — first.

Professor Martin was a frontrunner to be appointed vice-chancellor of his old university, UNSW, in 2015.

After missing out on that job to current UNSW chief Ian Jacobs, he became vice-chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University in Britain in 2016.

The University of New England will also soon be appointing a new vice-chancellor after incumbent Annabelle Duncan announced on Friday she would step down when her 5½-year term ends in August next year.

Professor Duncan brought stability to the university, implementing a new strategic plan, after the unexpected resignation of her predecessorJim Barber in 2014.

“It has been a privilege to lead the university during this time of upheaval and opportunity in education,” Professor Duncan said.

She said she was confident UNE would continue to adapt and prosper.
