Federal Labor has made a new $300 million funding pledge to universities, saying it will offer extra money for new buildings and facilities should it win the next federal election.

The money — to be called the university future fund and to be spread over five years starting in 2019-20 — is on top of Labor’s promise to remove the funding cap imposed by the Turnbull government on university course subsidies.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek has said removing the cap would cost up to $10 billion over 10 years.

The ALP has also promised $174m to support students from areas where fewer people enrol and graduate from universities.
