Spirulina the secret to this blue dream smoothie

Twins Ashley and Taylor Johnston, who live in British Columbia, Canada, have made smoothies their life – at least on social media. Here’s one of their most popular creations.

This smoothie was our second recipe to go viral after our Strawberries ‘n’ Cream Bowl. It looked so blue that People magazine interviewed us about it! Luckily, it’s also delicious, satisfying, and good for you. We love it for breakfast. The pineapple and coconut give it a dreamy, tropical vibe, while the protein powder offers thickness and substance. And the blue? That comes from just a teaspoon of blue spirulina powder-a little goes a long way!

Serves 1 to 2

INGREDIENTS

  • 1½ cups (360ml) coconut milk
  • 2 cups (350g) frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1 scoop (25g) vanilla protein powder
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1 teaspoon blue spirulina powder

METHOD

  1. Pour the coconut milk into a high-powered blender. Add the pineapple and protein powder, followed by the ice cubes, and finally, top with the blue spirulina powder.
  2. Begin blending at medium speed, and work your way up to high.
  3. Use the blender’s tamper to push the fruit down to the bottom and remove any air bubbles from the corners. If your blender doesn’t have a tamper, turn the blender off and use a wooden spoon or spatula to push down the fruit and scrape the sides. Blend until you’ve reached your desired thick and smooth consistency, two to three minutes.
  4. Scoop into your favourite glasses.
