Palace letters didn’t deliver what ABC wanted on Whitlam dismissal

The ABC must be bitterly disappointed that the palace was not involved in the dismissal of the Whitlam government. Its journalists were rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of dumping dung on history.

When is someone going to state the obvious: When the combatants could not agree, the governor-general let the people decide — which they did very convincingly. Was it a crime to put it to the electorate? I say “good solution, John Kerr”.

Don McGregor, Baulkham Hills, NSW

Is it time for the ABC to stop playing again and again Gough Whitlam’s off-the-cuff words on the steps of Parliament House? Although Sir John Kerr acted constitutionally, sadly nothing saved him from the nasty, frenzied personal attacks upon him that followed. The ABC might well show instead the announcement of the Coalition’s overwhelming victory following Kerr’s correct calling of an election.

Contrary to common perception the Coronavirus is actually creating and maintaining significant employment. You can’t go anywhere in the media without an encounter with all those employed counting, reporting, analysing, opining and commenting on the daily numbers.

Robert Harcourt, Hahndorf, SA

“It will all be over by Christmas”. Famous last words at the start of World War I.

Alexander Haege, Tamarama, NSW

I commend Drew Pavlou on his determination to take the University of Queensland to the Supreme Court (“Uni suspension cut ‘a cynical PR move’”, 14/7). I also commend his pro-bono barrister, Tony Morris QC. Had Morris not come forward I’m sure a GoFundMe page would have raised thousands to support this admirable young man’s fight against Chinese influence in our universities.

Yvonne Crane, Killarney Heights, NSW

Lee Warner (Last Post, 14/7), you are right about Western Australia, but there is a big difference between digging things out of the ground and growing and manufacturing them for export. Where would the “powerhouse” of WA be without these in the Commonwealth?

Tony Healy, Balwyn North, Vic

To quote Paul Kelly’s lyrics, “Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747 at night?” With Qantas retiring the “queen of the skies” will this become a distant memory?

Kenneth Gregson, Swansea, Tas

Now that the Chicos and Redskins are gone with the wind, I wonder if the virtue-signallers across the Tasman will be brave enough to tackle the world’s best rugby team.

Neville Clark, Battery Point,Tas
