Opponents of Folau’s stance are being hypocritical

Would such a storm have transpired if Israel Folau’s social media post hadn’t mentioned homosexuals? It is curious that the Atheist Foundation has not made any public pronouncement of being offended that they, too, were among those in the list of transgressors who were in need of salvation.

The rainbow brigade is being treated like an endangered species, whose every motive is considered pure and justified, yet every year Sydney is treated to the licentious Mardi Gras where members of this supposedly oppressed minority dress up as Catholic nuns or gyrate half-naked around a bust of Fred Nile. Any sporting personalities who participate in this are hailed as inclusive heroes, trailblazing the way for others who might be questioning their own sexuality.

Folau’s stance embodies the difficulty of standing by what is a biblically orthodox position in a society that is now quick to label any disagreement with the gay lifestyle as homophobic. This is not social progress.

It seems to me that Israel Folau has not made any threats against anyone. He hasn’t wished anyone any harm There haven’t been any “behead infidels” in his posts. Much as I might warn an intoxicated friend that the law might not welcome him driving his car, Folau has warned a list of sinners that God might not be happy with them. Some might say that it is good advice.

Folau has threatened nothing and has not said that they should not be allowed to play rugby. Yet for this Christian advice his livelihood is now threatened and some have said that they might have difficulty playing with him. Clearly he is being excluded because of his beliefs. “Inclusion”, it appears, is only for some.

When Arthur Stace wrote “Eternity” on the streets of Sydney last century, he was saying the same thing as Israel Folau, but we celebrate the one and punish the other. Both men are wanting us to face the reality of our eternal destiny. Both agree that the only way to prepare for that is by faith in Jesus who died on the cross to atone for our sins, motivated by love.

The critics agree that we should have freedom of speech but they go on to say there are consequences. If the consequences are that you lose your job, I would not call that freedom of speech — it’s persecution.

The way the media refuses to correct the misuse of the Bible by Israel Folau shows how ignorant they are of accepted Christian theology.

The scripture he based his comment on does not even mention the word hell. It talks about “shall not inherit the kingdom of God”, a phrase used by Jesus and other church leaders to point to the positive possibility of society as it should be, could be, and which we all hope for.

I did not vote for same-sex marriage for several reasons. One was that the LGBTI lobby has demonstrated intolerance for those who oppose its ideology and, by political correctness, tries to stifle any alternative view.

Israel Folau’s case is just the most notable of such attempts to suppress free speech. Australia can expect much more of this if Labor and their Greens allies are elected. Labor and the Greens have been the flag carriers for the LGBTI lobby for two decades. Now Labor has introduced the most abhorrent abortion legislation in the world in Victoria and Queensland.

People opposing Labor’s repugnant policy can expect much the same treatment as is being meted out to Folau. The libertarian Left will not tolerate family values.

Israel Folau looks like being banned, like so many brilliant athletes before him, because he read and wrote from an old book. Come on — this is Australia and it’s 2019. We also get a smack in the face from the LGBTI lobby every Mardi Gras that insults Christians. Folau’s offence is a minor one compared with what Christians have suffered at the hands of the LGBTI minority.

Irene Shanks, Mareeba, Qld

One wonders when the persecution of Christians around the world, including the persecution of Israel Folau, will generate the inevitable push back. Christianity is a sleeping giant, and the politically correct classes do not seem to have thought about the consequences of waking it.
