Let’s kill two birds with one stone

We could kill two birds with one stone. Provide the 36,000 new federal public servants in Canberra with canoes, train them in naval combat on Lake Burley Griffin and then send them off into the Tasman Sea for close quarter surveillance. What could possibly go wrong? By the way, that force would be larger than the current number of permanent soldiers.

Paul Harris, Mosman, NSW

In some ways the Chinese naval incident is quite ironic. We’ve been so remiss about our own defence we’re in about the same state as Captain Cook found the original inhabitants. In fact, the three-ship flotilla, may have been sufficient for an invasion.

Maris Dabars, Murray Bridge, SA

I was very pleased to hear there was no cloud cover when the Virgin Australia pilot first spotted the three Chinese war ships close to Australian waters. It makes me wonder what could’ve happened if it didn’t.

My dream is to now see a televised meeting between Prime Minister Albanese and President Trump in the Oval Office.

Julie Winzar, Palm Beach, Qld

One can only laugh at the ill-conceived tactics of the Albanese government as it nears polling day. Labor has a bottomless pit of taxpayers’ money for its pork barrelling, while the Coalition is taking money from Medicare. This untruth is obvious and serves little purpose other than to demonstrate the desperation of the Labor Party.

Tom Moylan, Dudley Park, WA

While appeasing Russia and betraying and exploiting courageous Ukraine, President Trump has overturned decades of Western and US principles of supporting democracies and freedom-loving allies.

Kevin Burke, Sandringham, Vic

The public spat between presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky was a significant backward step in the resolution of the Ukraine war. Hopefully, on reflection, both men will calm down and do what’s best for their countries in the longer term – and for world peace.

If your son were disciplined enough to purchase a house at age 19, you’d be skiting to the neighbours, wouldn’t you?

Rosemary O’Brien, Ashfield, NSW

That anyone would suggest that Marty Sheargold’s vile ranting was no more offensive than saying that the Matildas’ performance was shocking is absolutely beyond belief.

Elizabeth Harrington, Milton, Qld
