Last Post: Preferential system has facilitated a sophisticated, spiteful, morally corrupt game of numbers

I’m not normally given to writing fan letters to newspaper columnists but today I’m happy to make an exception. Jack the Insider’s diary of a Kooyong teal doctor was laugh-out-loud, bloody brilliant.

Jack (I’m not a doctor) the Insider, you have made my day.

John Field, Coolum, Qld

I note Simon Holmes a Court has pumped another $50,000 into Zoe Daniel’s campaign for the seat of Goldstein. Essentially, Goldstein is a “rotten borough”. Isn’t it about time we abolished rotten boroughs in Australia?

Gordon Cheyne, Armadale, Vic

In her column, Peta Credlin documents the litany of lies, deception and incompetence of the Albanese government – it is devastating. But what does this say of the calibre of the opposition that, gifted with such an indefensible record to attack, it has managed to fall behind in the polls with every passing week of the campaign so far?

After the likely election loss, the Liberal Party should ask itself: “Is there any principle or core belief in which we differ from the Labor Party?” or “Why don’t we join them?” Apart from the savings, we could then avoid elections being policy-free, competing lists of handouts, while the country slides into ruin.

Brett Hunt, Rosanna, Vic

In my 20s, I lived in Paul Keating’s Blaxland electorate. Later, we moved but were still in Keating territory, until he retired, and then it became Jason Clare territory. More than half a century of voting for the Libs in Labor strongholds. You’d think my luck might change, when I moved to Ashfield. Fat chance: I’m now in Albo’s electorate.

Rosemary O’Brien, Ashfield, NSW

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that President Donald Trump, Keith Kellogg and Steve Witkoff are totally out of their depth and Vladimir Putin is playing them like a violin. These three blind mice are just so embarrassing to watch, and gutless. But then an indicted war criminal, warmonger, devious KGB thug and convicted felon Trump have a lot in common.

Coke Tomyn, Camberwell, Vic

I’m disillusioned by our preferential system of voting as it has now facilitated a sophisticated, spiteful, morally corrupt game of numbers. All Australians lose and the carpetbaggers, mostly overseas operatives selling our renewable future, are off with the heist.

Sarah Childs, Lithgow, NSW
