Last Post: You’re the Voice an own goal for the Yes camp

“You’re the voice, try and understand it” has become the biggest own goal of the sinking Yes campaign.

Paul Haege, Darling Point, NSW

One has to wonder at the Yes campaign’s decision to use John Farnham’s hit song with the lyrics “You’re the voice, try and understand it”. The lyrics seem more in line with the No side.

Kathryn Halliwell, Coffs Harbour, NSW

The Yes side has John Farnham’s You’re the Voice. Perhaps the No side should go with I Am Australian (We are One)?

Tim Abrams, Beecroft, NSW

Peter Dutton has suggested that the referendum question be changed. In response, Professor Anne Twomey says this is impossible given there are only six weeks to the poll. If it is too difficult to change the question, perhaps it is the poll date that should be changed.

Virginia Browne, Melbourne

So, as George Williams explains (“Coalition’s claims on ‘rigged’ voice vote must be called out”, 4/9), because of a savings clause, a tick in the Yes or No box is an acceptable indication of intent but a cross isn’t. It’s no wonder those of us who spend our lives filling out forms by ticking or crossing boxes to convey legally binding information are shaking our heads.

John Lake, Mosman Park, WA

George Williams might be a professor of law at a prestigious university, but he has no common sense. Having both a Yes and No box on the ballot paper removes all doubt about fairness. Is this too hard to understand?

Betty Warner, Esperance, WA

If we applied the “vote Yes without details” to life’s major events, we would sign away our rights and responsibilities when buying a house, setting up a bank account, taking a job, making a business contract, getting married and so on. Scams, like cuckoos’ eggs, rely on the naive goodwill and poor circumspection of the victims to succeed, but in the end they do not deliver what was promised.

Rosemary McGrath, Dulwich, SA

Johannes Leak’s cartoon (“Grassroots movement”, 4/9) gives meaning to the often repeated claim that a picture is worth a thousand words. Changing the Constitution is a weighty matter for the voter. We need to guard against the intrusion of big money from the corporates in our democratic processes.

Jennie George, Mollymook, NSW

Some readers, older and (polls suggest) wiser, will remember the radio serial Yes, What?

John Bunyan, Campbelltown, NSW
