Cutting migrants? Believe it when we see it
Scott Morrison has now taken to stand-up comedy in an effort to convince a sceptical public (“PM expects migration cap to be cut by 30,000”, 20/11). The blatant dishonesty of our Federal Government promoting an economy based on never-ending population growth is a national disgrace. There is absolutely no mystery as to why voters are losing faith in our institutions.
If the government goes to an election promising to restrict migrants moving to Sydney or Melbourne, they won’t win a single seat in southeast Queensland. If Sydney and Melbourne are closed off, the next obvious choice is Brisbane.
A prime minister who can fry an egg and an opposition leader who wants to fry the housing market.
The self-generated perfect economic storm calculated to cause a recession if not a depression: migration caps, attacks on negative gearing and franking credit refunds, internationally uncompetitive company tax rate. Goodbye, lucky country
I didn’t realise hiring a few gay teachers could cause the collapse of the entire religious school system. Maybe we should recruit more gay soldiers to fight Islamic State?
There will be no Xmas this year — it will be known as “the festive season”. And what will Easter be called? I’m happy to be a Jew, and like our Muslim friends, we haven’t changed any names.
What Kevin Donnelly really means when he says “the West has turned its back on a glorious heritage” (“Ignorance, Islamism our greatest threats”, 20/11) is that many in the West have lost faith in white male privilege to deliver a better world.
We must take terrorism seriously (“Dutton’s attack on trivialised terrorism”, 20/11), but broadening the term to include the violence of seriously deranged individuals, as happened after the Martin Place siege and Bourke Street attack, makes it more difficult to do so.
As we say farewell to Sisto Malaspina and raise a latte or long black in tribute to him and Pellegrinis, how about considering a scholarship in his name for a young Melburnian to study in the hospitality industry? All aspects of wining and dining, especially Italian and migrant contributions to our food growth. Any takers?
