Manus naval base will frustrate China.
It’s great that the US and Australia will develop a naval base on Manus Island. This will frustrate China’s plans to link their Spratley facilities with their Darwin beachhead.
Greg Sheridan is incorrect when he says Darwin was the only Australian city to be bombed by the Japanese during World War II (“Not a Cold War but competition is running hot”, 17/11). In March 1942 Japanese planes bombed Broome.
Caroline Overington (“A touch too much #MeToo fatigue”, 17/11) reflects a variety of interesting perspectives and experiences. One aspect of the #MeToo movement that puzzles me is it overlooks women who victimise, marginalise, harass and humiliate other women.
If the wedding magazine White has had to shut down because advertisers have bailed out over its hetero-only stance, that is the price of having principles.
If it was a porn magazine or website that was closed down, or one devoted to the violent overthrow of the government, one would not be so perplexed. But a wedding magazine? If a lobby group is emboldened to set in train such a sequence of events, does that speak more to the problems of the magazine, or to the legal and cultural framework of the country in which it all happens?
We all knew about these problems with the LGBTI lobby as Christian schools closed down in Britain rather than be forced into teaching gay sex in their curriculum. There was plenty of knowledge of bakers and wedding businesses being attacked but our government gleefully went ahead with the plebiscite.
Maybe the wedding magazine could sue its trolls. Being brave enough to attack people should be at a cost to oneself. Until someone is made to pay an actual price for these kinds of attacks, we will see more.
Sophia (Letters, 14/11) says “Islam spreads the word of peace and compassion”. I wonder if that is the same peace and compassion as expressed by Muslims in Pakistan through demands that Christian Asia Bibi be executed for drinking water from a cup used by Muslim women? Perhaps it is the same peace and compassion that kept Asia Bibi jailed for eight years for that offence.
For a supposed humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Hamas seems to have plenty of money to build tunnels and purchase hundreds of rockets.
