We all get to vote, Ms Triggs.
On the ABC’s Q&A on Monday night, Gillian Triggs said Scott Morrison was spending too much time wearing a baseball cap and talking to farming and regional people to gauge the mood of the people. She said Australians are a sophisticated group of people who can handle the big issues. This may be so, but unfortunately for “sophisticated people” like Triggs, those annoying unsophisticated people in the bush (Hillary Clinton refers to them as “deplorables”) still, in this great democracy, get to vote at every election, just like Triggs.
As The Australian points out, the Prime Minister has a good news story for the Australian people. His task now is to sell it (“Scott Morrison is running out of time to start anew”, 13/11). He can begin by shedding his fair dinkum look, putting on a suit and tie and making a formal “address to the nation” a regular feature of his prime ministerial duties. This would enable him to assert his authority as leader and to give the nation a sense of direction and purpose. He should do this as often as necessary between now and May next year.
Recent polls have not been kind to Scott Morrison but when people realise the impact Opposition policies have on Australians with negative gearing and franking credits the polls will start reflecting a change in the mood in the electorate.
The multitude of readers of The Australian who would say “no” to a republic recognise the right of the paper to take a contrary view. As an admirer of Oliver Cromwell as well as a supporter of the post-1688 Crown, I’m sure I speak for most non-republicans when I ask that we be called “monarchists” rather than “royalists” (“Walking the republican plank”, 13/11).
Can someone please explain why spending $160 million on a republican plebiscite is acceptable but spending an identical amount on the same sex marriage plebiscite is considered outrageous?
If, as the Prime Minister says, imams must know who the terrorists are in their congregations, then he must also believe Christian bishops and cardinals etc must have known who the pedophiles were in their churches. Let’s have one rule for all Australians, Scott Morrison, regardless of their religion or beliefs.
Muslims who want to settle and assimilate here should be welcomed and encouraged but forcing would-be terrorists to remain in Australia — to exercise a solemn vow of martyrdom — is plain stupid.
