Last Post: Newspoll, epidemiology and silencing dissent

If ever a headline in The Australian was the cause of dyspepsia over my breakfast, it was “Locked down and living with it: state backs Dan (22/9)”.

Anthony Anderson, Templestowe Lower, Vic

Going by the latest Newspoll results in Victoria it would appear that the Stockholm syndrome has kicked in: no vaccine for that either.

Ralph Gartner, Mitchelton, Qld

Daniel Andrews has replaced the mythical Hungarian – his approval polling numbers are proof that he alone has the ability to enter a revolving door behind you and come out in front.

John Dorman, Toowoomba, Qld

It’s no surprise that a solid majority of Victorians support the Andrews government’s draconian lockdown measures. Add together the rusted on Labor voters, public servants with guaranteed jobs, those whose income has been lifted by JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments, and an older generation fearful of the alternative following government bungling, and you have the numbers.

Paul Bailey, Auchenflower, Qld

In a parallel universe, the board of inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic found that 62 per cent of passengers indicated total confidence in the captain and crew of the ship. However, neither the captain or any of the senior crewmembers could identify who made the decision to travel at high speed in the dark in a sea riddled with icebergs.

Greg Angelo, Balwyn North, Vic

If I was CEO of a business in Victoria and made an error of that cost over 700 people their lives and then paid out over $3bn in an attempt to mollify those left standing, I would be criminally liable and no doubt spend the rest of my life in jail.

David Gibson, Castle Cove, NSW

I think Chris Eccles misspoke “Top public servant Chris Eccles says he doesn’t know who decided to use private security”, 22/9). Rather than “collective governance” he should have said “collective incompetence”.

Neil Forbes, Stratford, Qld

I always read with interest Adam Creighton’s musings on public health and epidemiology (“We shut up shop for a virus that was unlikely to kill us”, 22/9). Perhaps you could give equal space to your health editor so we could read that person’s musings on economics?

Jane Stephens, Fitzroy, Vic

Liberal Senator Claire Chandler has expressed views I happen to agree with. If I am offended by those who express a different view am I able to appeal to the Anti Discrimination Commission to take up my case (“Silencing dissent — now that’s the road to tyranny”, 22/9)?

Ray Whitfield, Mudgee, NSW
