Last Post: Biden, Trump and the not so great debate

The Trump/Biden debate should have been conducted on Zoom. The mute button is super reliable.

Peter Armitage, Carlton, Vic

Speculation that Donald Trump may not stand down if defeated may be a defining moment in American politics as the country teeters on the edge of democracy or autocracy.

Kenneth Gregson, Swansea, Tas

Joe Biden wouldn’t inspire anyone. The pity is he might win simply because Trump haters want him out.

Barbara Worrall, Mosman, NSW

I thought I’d be saying Donald Trump cut Hidin’ Biden down like a big oak tree. But Biden is no big oak tree.

Tom Davis, Mosman Park, WA

After the first debate, I recommend Donald Trump and Joe Biden be forced to wear cones of shame.

Evan Evans, Lindisfarne, Tas

Greg Sheridan asserts Donald Trump looked strong and forceful during the first debate. I can assure him this is not how anyone who has experienced bullying would view Trump’s behaviour. Trump’s fitness for leadership is a key issue in this presidential election.

Sue Lester, Grange, SA

An uncanny thing (and yes, there were oodles) about the debate was every time the challenger chanced his toe in the hot water of figures/stats, Donald Trump would interrupt his straying stream of consciousness, allowing Joe Biden time to reassemble his thoughts. I’m not a debating coach, but hey, Donald, next time, how about waiting till you see the whites of his eyes?

Rosemary O’Brien, Ashfield, NSW

Donald Trump’s refusal to denounce white supremacists should be enough for every conservative to turn from him. Surely if his boasting about sexual assault weren’t enough, this is.

Todd Jorgensen, Healesville, Vic

Oh no. Could Donald Trump have been right about hydroxychloroquine?

George Fishman, Vaucluse, NSW

What a pub brawl that debate was.

Kon Parris, North Parramatta, NSW

The only thing that can be learned from the debate is that you should never wrestle with a pig. You both get covered in mud but he enjoys it.

Jeff Grey, Hamilton, Qld

Douglas Golding asks how George Pell was allowed to fly out of Australia when others cannot (Last Post, 30/9). Given the treatment the cardinal has received from the left-wing commentariat I imagine he would have been happy to swim to Italy had he not been successful in securing an airline ticket.

Barry Noonan, Balwyn North, Vic
