Last Post: A reporter, masks in the bush and a very modern crossword

Rachel Baxendale must be doing something right. The “I stand with Dan” crowd have taken an intense dislike of her for asking the Victorian Premier an obvious question. She merely wanted to know why someone alone in regional Victoria, far from anyone else, needs to wear a mask. The Premier could not answer or provide any supporting health evidence for doing so.

Jeremy C. Browne, Ripponlea, Vic

So, Premier Andrews says we must wear masks even when out in the bush with no one else around. Is he worried someone might catch COVID-19 from a bat?

Graham Nicholson, Hawthorn, Vic

If it is not doing so already, surely this is the appropriate moment for the Liberal opposition in Victoria to reveal a formidable and trustworthy presence, not to criticise the Andrews government but to inspire the confidence of voters.

Peter Searcy, Mile End, SA

On TV on Monday night there was a replay of a press conference Daniel Andrews gave on March 27 thanking the PM for his ADF offer. If the Premier and all his departments missed it they should watch the Paul Murray show more often.

Paul Haege, Darling Point, NSW

There appears to be some confusion as to who signed up the hotel security guards, a government minister or a public servant. Surely any action by a public servant would be ordered by the minister responsible based on advice, sound or otherwise, from the public service. The buck stops with the minister and, ultimately, the Premier.

Peter Clarke, Corinda, Qld

KPMG were paid about $3.5 million to advise the Victorian Government on its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Why didn’t the hotel quarantine inquiry call up the staff of KPMG? A similar question should be asked about why the inquiry didn’t call people from the private contractors. One suspects the truth was never the object of the inquiry.

Peter de Lepervanche, Clontarf, Qld

The difference between public servants and private employees will come to the fore as a result of this inquiry In private enterprise, they would all be sacked. None of these bureaucrats will be fired. They may be removed from their positions , demoted, moved sideways, but I’d wager they all stay on the same pay and conditions.

John Partridge, Manly, NSW

Donald Trump needs to get Kerry Packer’s accountant. Paying $750 in federal income tax is way too much.

Peter Lauricella, Beerwah, Qld

A very modern crossword on Tuesday — “Uber” the answer to 6 down.

Cluny Seager, Chermside, Qld
