Adam Bandt should understand the power of words

New Greens leader Adam Bandt is a scary politician. The inflammatory words Bandt is prepared to use to attack his political opponents are extreme. (“Bandt ‘abused PM’ with deaths claim”, 5/2).

There are at least two things that are frightening about the nature of Bandt’s comments; first his choice of expression, because he is an educated man who knows the power of words.

Second, while the Greens leader almost certainly will never form a government, he does not rule out doing a deal with a future Labor government to secure a powerful cabinet position. That would be a political emergency.

Adam Bandt’s abusive language towards the Prime Minister may play well with the party’s base but it will be treated with contempt by everyone else. He should be condemned by all politicians.

Riley Brown, Bondi Beach, NSW

The elevation of Adam Bandt to Greens leadership will allow the completion of the party’s transition.

From its noble intentions of saving the environment, Bob Brown’s strategy was progressively subverted by Richard Di Natale to a party focusing on social engineering and wealth redistribution. This process will be completed by Bandt as his extreme socialist ideology takes over and the much lampooned water melon becomes the reality.

Graham Pinn, Maroochydore, Qld

Adam Bandt has as much charisma and personality as a garden gnome and sounds like a grumpy, middle-aged Greta Thunberg. I suspect that we will be told ad nauseam that Australia’s 1.3 per cent greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for every natural event and will help wreck the planet. Help!

Coke Tomyn, Camberwell, Vic

Listening to Adam Bandt on Wednesday left me bewildered. If Australia reduced emissions by 100 per cent — 1.3 per cent of the world’s emissions — we would still experience the fire and drought catastrophes that he thinks our emissions reduction efforts will resolve.

It’s the world climate that dictates Australia’s fate, so he must be quite deluded to believe pushing our economy to zero emissions will fix it.

I don’t know anyone who does not want zero pollution or no plastic in the ocean. We all want affordable power, environmental protection, and strong animal welfare.

In my view Bandt is unfit to lead, because he won’t work with the rest of us in a constructive manner.

Evatt Furney, Gordon, NSW

New Greens leader Adam Bandt is a deadly joke. It is unfortunate though that he has a following, principally among Melbourne’s leftists, those with a jaundiced view of the world, its problems and what we must do to fix them.

Bandt is the most extreme leftie to lead the Greens to date. Those before him have been moderates in comparison. There is an aspect of Bandt that should cause even his strongest supporters to get nervous. There is no guarantee what he will do or say.

John George, Terrigal, NSW

Adam Bandt is a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage, signifying nothing. Thankfully only 10 per cent of voters take the Greens seriously, while the remainder see them as a sideshow.

Paul de Young, Marmion, WA

The first thing Adam Bandt could tell Scott Morrison and green dreamers is what materials he is going to build his renewable energy infrastructure and power generators with.

The future for the Greens with all their good intentions looks more Gilligans Island than the Jetsons. The Greens problem is in climate change.

Murray Horne, Cressy, Vic

I appeal to those piling on Adam Bandt to give it a rest and to have some respect for the multitude who voted Greens at the last election. The climate deniers and alt-right extremists might think they are exposing him as a dingbat but they should realise that, for his loyal followers, his are honeyed words.

Frank Pulsford, Aspley, Qld

In labelling Adam Bandt an attack dog, it looks like someone might have put red cordial in the water cooler. He is about as threatening as a toy poodle and with much the same gravitas.

John McHarg, Maylands, WA
