In the first episode of The Australian’s Money Cafe Summer ReStart series, we cover the general approach investors might take to investing from first principles.

We’re taking the summer break to introduce – or reintroduce – investing to all our readers and listeners. Over three episodes we’ll be offering a guide to the everyday investor on all aspects of investing.

In the first episode we cover the general approach investors might take to investing from first principles. We look at the concept of the balanced portfolio where we don’t put all our eggs in one basket (asset allocation).

You’ll also find a very useful guide to the basic tax lessons every investor needs to know – the right tax structure for your investing and how to optimise your taxable income when you become an active investor.

We also look at the need to view investing holistically – you might have investments inside a super fund and others which are kept separately. We find out how to balance these divisions in your portfolio.

Then there is the tricky business of borrowing to invest – you borrow for your home, millions of people have no issue borrowing for property, but what about borrowing for shares?

Throughout our series, adviser James Gerrard helps investors make key decisions in an easy-to-follow manner.

In episode two we will introduce listeners to shares and managed funds, including exchange traded funds (ETFs), while in episode three we get into the nitty gritty of how to invest in property.

Don’t miss these special editions of the Money Cafe which will be published on December 30, January 6 and January 13 – we will be back with the regular show on January 20.

In the meantime if you have any questions on any aspect of investing for James Kirby and his guests send them to: moneycafe@theaustralian.com.au
