Having clinched the Tory leadership, Boris Johnson is set to become Britain’s newest prime minister UK this week.

The 55-year-old pro-Brexiter and former mayor of London beat Jeremy Hunt to become the party’s leader in place of Theresa May — who announced her resignation in May — on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump praised the new prime minister, calling Mr Johnson a “good man,” who was “tough” and “smart”.”They call him Britain Trump — that’s a good thing,” Mr Trump said. “They like me over there, that’s what they wanted, what they need.”

Born in the US to upper-middle class British parents and schooled at Eton and Oxford, Mr Johnson is the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip. According to Eton’s website, the school charges currently charges £14,167 per “half”, or school term, of which there are three in a year.

His duties as an MP grant him an annual salary of £79,468 ($A141,500), according to the Parliament’s website. When he becomes Prime Minister, his salary is expected to increase to £150,402, according to FullFact.

Mr Johnson — a journalist-turned-politician — is also a weekly columnist for The Daily Telegraph, which earns him an additional £275,000 a year, according to a report from The Guardian in 2018. He has previously worked for The Times and The Spectator. Mr Johnson will give up his columnist role on taking office as prime minister.

The newest prime minister also reportedly makes plenty of money on royalties from his numerous books including his 2015 biography of Winston Churchill, The Churchill Factor, Express reported. Mr Johnson also reportedly donates about £50,000 to charity, according to the outlet.

In total, the new prime minister is worth approximately £1.6 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Meanwhile, the website estimates his predecessor, Mrs May, is worth about £2 million.
