Racing Victoria CEO Andrew Jones quits in surprise announcement
Racing Victoria CEO Andrew Jones has announced his resignation after battling with billionaire racehorse owner Jonathan Munz.
Racing Victoria CEO Andrew Jones has announced his resignation from the sporting body, in a shock email sent to associates on Friday morning.
Mr Jones said his exit was timed to provide the agency’s yet-to-be-named chair the opportunity to pick their own operational leader.
Former AFL boss Gillon McLachlan is firming as a likely candidate to be picked for the chair role.
Mr Jones had been the subject of longstanding criticism from some stakeholders, including billionaire racehorse owner Jonathan Munz, chairman of the Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners’ Association, and Victoria Racing Club CEO Steve Rosich.
Mr Jones and some Racing Victoria directors had been the subject of an unsuccessful boardroom putsch by Mr Munz last month.
“I thank each and every one of you for your support over the past two years and beyond,” Mr Jones wrote. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with you.”
Mr Jones named several highlights from his time at the organisation, namely securing more than $2bn in funding for racing, enhanced equine welfare policies, increased support for jockeys and trainers and “the first metropolitan club merger in decades”.
“All the while managing through a very material drop in wagering across the industry,” he wrote.
