A spectacular beach-style mansion owned by one of Queensland’s richest families on Hayman Island has been listed with aggressive price expectations in the mid $20 millions.

The Peabody family, headed by richlister Terry Peabody, has listed the five-bedroom house, which was designed and project managed by the late award-winning architect Kerry Hill, who was responsible for iconic properties such as Malaysia’s Datai Hotel on Langkawi.

The marketing agent, Abercrombys’ Jock Langley, said the Peabody property on the edge of Hayman Island in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands, which was built around 2009, has been released to the market for the first time.

“It’s a private house that has never been rented out,” said Mr Langley, who is marketing the property via an international and a local campaign with Rachael Spinks of Queensland’s Spinks & Co.

The house is being offered on a 100-year lease on a walk-in basis with all furniture and two golf buggies included. However, the billionaire Peabody family will be retaining the artwork and sculptures.

The house offers one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most breathtaking views of the unique formations of the Whitsunday Islands rising from the Coral Sea, according to the agents.

The new owners can choose to use full access to the services of the nearby InterContinental Hayman Island Resort on the island including its food and beverage offerings.

The multi-level five-bedroom and six-bathroom house positioned on a sloping 1100sq m block is one of just two residential houses on the island just off the mainland township of Airlie Beach. Hayman Island can be reached by boat from the nearby Oatley family-owned Hamilton Island, which has an airstrip. The property has a swimming pool and you will not be built out, Mr Langley said.

“The view from the pool is overwhelming”.

It is understood the other house on the island is owned by Andrew Muir of the retailing giant The Good Guys.

Mulpha, a Malaysian conglomerate, has long attempted to sell properties within its Hayman Island residential subdivision which is within walking distance of the InterContinental Resort which it also owns. It has also put its resort on the market from time to time but failed to find a buyer.

Family patriarch Terry Peabody, a leading coal producer, made his fortune from mining and he also owns the popular Craggy Range Winery in New Zealand.

Mr Langley said the Peabody house would be of great appeal to lovers of good design who really enjoy the ability to buy a turnkey property that is in a resort environment and that is hard to find, and is unique, certainly in this part of the world.

“It is hard to find in Australia.

“That is what really appeals to me – the option is you can be part of the resort or do your own thing. You have the flexibility.”

Mr Langley said the buyer may be international or local.

“It really is an extraordinary offering,” he added.

At the other end of the scale Ray White Commercial is offering a leasehold island at the southern end of the Whitsundays via a mortgagee sale.

Victor Island will be auctioned on April 11 offering a refurbished house as well as a caretaker’s cottage. “Unfortunately for the owner, it is a mortgagee sale and someone will get an absolute bargain,” said Ray White Commercial agent, Michael Willems.

“By sea, Victor Island is only a 20-minute boat ride from Hay Point Marina or 10 minutes by helicopter from the Mackay Airport, yet it is worlds away from the hectic pace of city life and crowded holiday resorts,” said Ray White Surfers Paradise chairman Andrew Bell.

The 3.14 hectare property includes a four-bedroom and two-bathroom house. The island has a 224 rainwater storage and a desalination plant as well as a solar farm with a back-up generator.

Adjacent to an extended coral reef that provides a natural marina to moor small and large vessels, Victor Island is located less than 2km from the mainland and directly opposite Salonika Beach.
