Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s Anzac Day call
Abdel-Magied has endorsed a former GetUp! director who urged for people to tweet “Lest we forget (Manus)” on April 25.
Controversial media personality Yassmin Abdel-Magied has endorsed a former GetUp!director’s call for thousands of people to tweet “Lest we forget (Manus)” on Anzac Day.
Incoming Change.org national director Sally Rugg tweeted last night “What if thousands of us all tweeted ‘lest we forget (Manus)’ next week on April 25th…” The statement has been retweeted almost 500 times in less than 24 hours.

Ms Rugg, who is the former marriage equality campaign director for GetUp! and played a pivotal role in the same-sex marriage postal survey last year, tweeted a follow up statement saying “Anyone who thinks this tweet is about refugees and ANZAC Day is missing the point :).”

Ms Abdel-Magied sparked widespread controversy when she wrote “Lest We Forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine ...)” in a Facebook post last year. She later deleted the post and apologised.
The engineer and former ABC presenter endorsed Ms Rugg’s suggestion this morning, quote tweeting the original message with “Do it.”

Ms Abdel-Magied made headlines last week after she was denied entry to the US due to having the wrong visa. She has said she would have been treated better by border security if she was a “straight white male.”
Ms Abdel-Magied currently lives in the United Kingdom and will make her acting debut in the new SBS series Homecoming Queens.
