Logie Awards return to Sydney after a 37-year hiatus
Television’s night of nights will be held in Sydney for the first time since 1986, relocating from Queensland’s Gold Coast.
The nation’s biggest television awards are finally returning to Sydney after being held interstate for more than 30 years.
The TV Week Logie Awards will be held in Sydney for the first time since 1986, relocating from Queensland’s Gold Coast where they have been for the past four years – prior to this they were held in Melbourne.
Channel 7 will also air its first Logies in almost 20 years after signing a multi-year agreement with Are Media to broadcast the Australian TV’s night of nights, taking over the reins from Nine Entertainment.
Seven West Media managing director and chief executive officer James Warburton said he was thrilled the awards, which will be held on Sunday, July 30, were returning to NSW.
“The time was right to find a new home for the Logies and bringing them back to Sydney after more than 30 years made perfect sense,” he said.
“Australia’s TV networks and many of its major production companies are based in Sydney and the city provides a backdrop for some of the country’s most popular TV shows.”
Since the awards began in 1959, broadcasting rights have changed hands numerous times including between the ABC, Seven, Nine and Ten.
A venue has yet to be announced for this year’s awards which is its 63rd event.
Mr Warburton also thanked NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet for providing support to bring the Logies back to NSW and the Liberal leader said he was pleased the glitzy affair would be held in Sydney again.
“Sydney is the best city in Australia and the home of our television and production industries, making it the obvious choice for the TV WEEK Logie Awards,” he said
“Television’s night of nights now has its rightful home in the Harbour City, showcasing the glitz and glamour of our vibrant night-life.
“This will inject millions of dollars into the NSW economy, creating hundreds of jobs in production, hospitality and events.”
Last year’s awards ceremony was marred in controversy after Network Ten’s co-host of The Project, Lisa Wilkinson, gave a victory speech at the June 19 event after winning the category for the most outstanding news coverage or public affairs report for her interview with former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins where she revealed allegations of sexual assault inside Parliament House.
Wilkinson’s comments derailed the criminal trial involving Higgins and Chief Justice Lucy McCallum said the TV host’s comments “completely obliterated” the line between allegation and guilt.
Are Media chief executive officer Jane Huxley said it was a new era for the Logies.
“It’s so exciting to see the next era begin for the TV WEEK Logies, welcoming Seven as the official broadcast partner and with a new location for the illustrious awards night,” she said.
“The TV WEEK Logie Awards remains the most anticipated event of the year for the television industry as we celebrate the most popular stars and shows on our screens.”
