The Australian has picked up eight nominations, featuring as finalists across news, politics, courts, sport and features.
The Australian has picked up a slew of nominations for the prestigious NRMA Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism, featuring as finalists across news, politics, courts, sport and features.
Eight entries from The Australian were among the finalists announced in Sydney last night.
Among them was NSW Political Editor Andrew Clennell, whose profile on Malcolm Turnbull, ‘Siege mentality eats at Team Malcolm’ was popular with readers. He was nominated for the Outstanding Political Reporting award.
Legal Affairs Correspondent Nicola Berkovic was short-listed as a finalist in the Outstanding Court Reporting category for her forensic coverage of the NSW legal system.
The Weekend Australian Magazine’s star feature writer and best-selling author of debut novel Boy Swallows Universe, Trent Dalton, was nominated for the Jim Oram Award for outstanding features writing.
Peter Lalor, who covered the Australian cricket team’s controversial ball tampering scandal in South Africa, was nominated for the Peter Frilingos Award for Outstanding Sports Reporting.
Other finalists included Strewth’s James Jeffrey, who was nominated for the Peter Ruehl Award for outstanding columnist.
Cartoonist, Eric Loebbecke, former crime reporter, Dan Box and freelancer for The Australian, Ivan O’Mahoney, all received nominations in the Outstanding Video category. Lobbecke for his graphic journal depiction of the First Fleet and Box and O’Mahoney for their video series The Queen and Zak Grieve.
Sam Buckingham-Jones was nominated as a finalist for 2018 Young Journalist of the Year.
Kennedy Foundation chairman and senior judge Simon Dulhunty said the judges were greatly impressed with the calibre of this year’s entries.
“In a massive news year the standard of submissions is really exceptional in every category,” Mr Dulhunty said.
“In some categories it took judges days to finally sort out finalists from big fields, some of which had more than 50 entries.
More than 100 nominees from a record field of almost 550 entries have been chosen across the 32 competitive categories.
The winners will be announced on August 10 at a gala event a Royal Randwick.
