Journalists from The Australian earn at a slew of nominations for the Kennedy Awards

The Australian has picked up a slew of nominations for the prestigious Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism, featuring as finalists across crime, music, travel, sport and podcasts.

The Australian has picked up a slew of nominations for the prestigious Kennedy Awards for ­Excellence in Journalism, featuring as finalists across crime, music, travel, sport and podcasts.

Five entries from The Australian were among the finalists announced in Sydney last night.

Journalists Virginia Tapscott, Steve Jackson, Claire Harvey and Lia Tsamoglou have earned a joint nomination in the Outstanding Podcast category for My Sister’s Secrets – an investigation into the terrible secrets in Tapscott’s family and how abusers operate.

Senior writer Fiona Harari is nominated for Outstanding Legal and Courts Reporting for ­“Beyond Belief” – her Weekend Australian Magazine story on the shocking murder of 92-year-old Marjorie Walsh at the hands of her cleaner, Hanny Papanicolaou.

On the shortlist in Outstanding Travel Writing is associate editor Cameron Stewart for his Weekend Australian Magazine story “Wrecked on Great Keppel” on how the country’s best-known resort, now completely ruined and abandoned, became the “shameful ­secret” of Australian tourism.

Sports writer Will Swanton has been nominated for Outstanding Columnist for his Good Sports column giving his insights into every sport from tennis to boxing and golf to football.

And national music writer Andrew McMillen has been nominated for The Jim Oram Award for Outstanding Feature Writing for his profile of a lively afternoon with troubled rock star Daniel Johns – just nine days before the singer crashed his car while drink-driving near Newcastle.

The winners will be announced on August 12.
