Satirist John Oliver has taken aim at Barnaby Joyce’s “incredible family values” on his TV show as he brutally mocked the Deputy Prime Minister over his affair with former staffer Vikki Campion.

Mr Joyce’s affair with Ms Campion has made international headlines and Oliver used his nationwide US show Last Week Tonight to point out the apparent hypocrisy of Mr Joyce opposing gay marriage because he supported traditional family values, while having an affair with a member of staff.

”You may think that is hypocritical but in reality, Joyce has such incredible family values that he can’t restrict them to just one family,” Oliver told a laughing audience. “The Australian media has understandably jumped on this story like a deputy prime minister with a wife and four children jumping on his 33-year-old former media adviser.”

Oliver, who has found a rich seam of satire in Australian politics, went on to poke fun at Ms Campion’s estranged father Peter, who told Seven News; “I think a deputy PM on a spit would be quite a sight.”

Showing a clip of the bearded Mr Campion clutching a rolled up newspaper, Oliver joked:

”I think that might be the most Australian man who has ever lived.

“In Australia they don’t actually have Santa Claus, they just have that guy coming down your chimney whether you’ve been bad or good and he just beats you with a newspaper.”

Barnaby Joyce is a former favourite of Oliver, who used his show to take on the Deputy PM’s “war on terrier” over his threat to euthanase Johnny Depp’s dogs Pistol and Boo when they were brought illegally into Australia.

“I’ve got to say that’s pretty ballsy. Elected officials very rarely risk openly telling puppies to go f **k themselves,” Oliver told viewers, showing a photograph of Mr Joyce glaring at an alpaca.

He suggested that as retaliation, the US should demand that all things Australian be removed from the country within 50 hours.
