George Negus in nursing home with dementia

Journalist George Negus has been diagnosed with dementia and moved into a nursing home.

Journalist George Negus has been diagnosed with dementia and moved into a Sydney nursing home.

The 79-year-old newspaper and television reporter is best known for his work on 60 Minutes and Foreign Correspondent.

He recently faced serious health issues and his family released a statement about his deteriorating condition.

“As a family, we are sharing the new path we walk as George faces the realities of his diagnosis of dementia from Alzheimer’s disease,” the statement said.

“We continue to share wonderful family times and are grateful for the care and support we have had from extended family and friends over the past few years who understand our challenges.

“George continues to give and receive the love and respect of us all. We appreciate all the good wishes from near and far at this time.”

After starting his journalism career at The Australian, Negus was a founding correspondent of Nine’s 60 Minutes Australia program, which began in 1979. He worked on the show until 1986.

He worked across many current affairs programs and was founding host of the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent from 1992 to 1999.

In 2005 he hosted Dateline on the SBS and also hosted his own program, 6.30 with George Negus, on Network 10 in 2011.
