Friday Social: Jacket in ‘Twitter frenzy’; stunning lightning show and passport imposter
Why this jacket from Paris sparked a ‘Twitter frenzy’ and a round-up of other things we found down the back of the internet.
A roundup of some of the stories that have popped up in our social media feeds this week which were too good not to share, including facebook hoaxes, clothes trolls and the best inventions of the year.
JOURNO NAILS TROLL
It’s hard to imagine someone thinking about clothes while watching a journalist’s coverage of the tragic Paris terror attacks.
But apparently one man was sitting at home, watching television, sick of the jacket that ABC’s Europe Correspondent Lisa Millar had been wearing too much for his liking.

“Don’t you think when time permits a visit to ‘David Jones’ for a few more clothes might be a priority?” @stephenblackma1 tweeted the journalist.
It didn’t stop there. When she expressed her understandable confusion, the viewer followed up by asking “Da...the same jacket...report after report....I’m sure you follow...”
Thankfully, Lisa Millar shut down the sexist comments by explaining how news works.
@stephenblackma1 Funnily enough I didn't have time to shop. Mental note to self - pack better when covering breaking news tragedies

And then we learned a little too much about the Channel 9 cameraman covering the Paris attacks.
@LisaMillar @stephenblackma1 one of my cameramen wore the same underwear for five days straight because he had so little time to pack!

PHUC DAT BICH FOOLS EVERYONE (BUT NOT US)
An Australian man who made global headlines defending his name has revealed that ‘Phuc Dat Bich’ isn’t actually his name.
News outlets around the world jumped on the story after the man posted a picture of his passport in an effort to prove his story.
“I find it highly irritating the fact that nobody seems to believe me when I say that my full legal name is how you see it. I’ve been accused of a false and misleading name of which I find very offensive. Is it because I’m Asian? Is it?” he wrote.
What we consider more offensive is how many people actually believed this ridiculous story.
Mashable is now reporting the man previously known as Phuc Dat Bich is actually a Melburnian named Thien Nguyen.
Who would have thought.
SPECTACULAR LIGHT SHOW
This stunning video shows a group of lightning bolts connecting over Mango Hill, a suburb of Moreton Bay region, north of Brisbane.
HOVERBOARDS AND CHICKPEA PASTA
As we meander towards the end of 2015, so we come to that end-of-year tradition, the ‘Best/Worst of’ list.
Everything is up for debate, from celebs and films to sporting moments and leadership spills.
However, one list we do look forward to every year is Time Magazine’s best 25 inventions.
Personal favourites include hoverboards (obviously), chickpea pasta, the transparent truck, a pan that teaches you cook, the musical instrument which anyone can play instantly and the mattress in the box, which could take (at least some of the) pain out of a trip home from Ikea.
OVER THE MOON
Another Christmas tradition is the epic movie-like Christmas commercial event, which has become big business in recent years
British department store giant John Lewis has cornered the market in the tear-jerking Christmas spot in recent years, and their Man On the Moon campaign has already racked up an astonishing 18 million views on YouTube.
Not to be outdone, Aldi has released its own spoof version, with cut-price telescope for sale, of course. Which one do you reckon sums up the spirit of Christmas? It’s a close call, we reckon.
