ABC publishes false claims on Sky News broadcast of Christchurch terror attack
The ABC has published an opinion piece containing incorrect information on Sky News’ Christchurch terror attack broadcast.
The ABC has published an opinion piece claiming Sky News broadcast the Christchurch gunman’s live stream of scenes from inside a mosque, which was incorrect.
The opinion piece by former Sky News employee Rashna Farrukh was later amended with a note at the bottom saying the claim was incorrect and that the news broadcaster showed segments of the live stream but not from inside the mosque.
It also said Sky New Zealand pulled the feed from Sky News Australia, which was also incorrect.
“The column went through the usual review process, but two factual clarifications were made after publication,” an ABC spokeswoman said.
Farrukh, who identifies as a young Muslim woman in the piece, said she “had many crises of conscience” working at Sky News, but last Friday’s terror attack “snapped me out of the endless cycle of justifying my job to myself.”
“On Saturday, I finally sent in my letter of resignation,” she said in the piece.
Farrukh worked three shifts a fortnight at Sky News for the past three years.
