ABC Q+A executive producer Erin Vincent quits, two days after it was announced Stan Grant would not be returning

The public broadcaster’s political chatfest program has suffered another blow after the show's boss revealed she is leaving, just days after Stan Grant’s departure.

The Australian Business Network

The boss of the ABC’s Q+A program has quit just two days after it was revealed host Stan Grant would not be returning to the show.

Executive producer Erin Vincent has led the program for three years, and on Wednesday she announced on social media that she too would be leaving.

The program has endured a revolving door of hosts in recent years and falling ratings, plus a move from airing on Thursdays back to Monday nights.

Vincent posted on her Instagram account that “after 14 years at the ABC the time has come for something new”.

“I have had so many amazing opportunities at the ABC, leading so many passionate and talented people,” she said.

Vincent went on to list her various roles she held at the ABC and said she was moving on to become chief executive at Melbourne’s The Wheeler Centre, a books and ideas centre.

ABC news director Justin Stevens sent an email to staff on Wednesday and thanked Vincent for her service, including taking over Q+A at the beginning of 2020 and “navigating the program through pandemic lockdowns and restrictions”.

Stevens also said she led projects including the ABC’s 50:50 gender initiative to tackle the underrepresentation of women’s voices in the public sphere.

Olivia Hill-Douglas will take over as acting EP.

The ABC revealed on Monday that Grant, a Wiradjuri, Gurrawin and Dharawal man, would not be returning to his Q+A hosting duties after he cited relentless “racial abuse” following the public broadcaster’s controversial coverage of King Charles III’s coronation in May.

Radio National breakfast presenter Patricia Karvelas will take over hosting duties until at least of the end of the year, while also fulfilling her radio duties from Tuesdays to Fridays.

Grant remains on paid leave and when he does return to work an ABC spokeswoman said he would “move on to new projects with the ABC”.

Q+A has had numerous hosts in recent years including Hamish Macdonald until he quit in 2021 after suffering online abuse, and he was replaced by a rotating roster of hosts including Grant, Virginia Trioli and David Speers.

The show was also moved in 2022 from Thursday nights back to Monday nights after suffering falling ratings.

Grant took over as full-time host in August last year but said he was stepping down from his role in May and taking leave after suffering extensive abuse following the coronation coverage.

He was part of a 45-minute panel, overseen by executive producer Tim Ayliffe, that discussed in detail by impacts of colonisation and pain the monarchy had inflicted on Indigenous Australians as dignitaries arrived at Westminster Abbey in London for the historical event.

The coverage resulted in the ABC receiving more than 1800 complaints.

Earlier this week, The Australian revealed chair Ita Buttrose had apologised to the Australian Monarchist League who criticised the ABC’s coronation coverage.

The League sent her a petition with more than 10,000 signatures from annoyed people both in Australia and overseas about its broadcast that included the panel discussion.

Ms Buttrose said she was “sorry” for the broadcast and said lessons could be learned for future live events.
