ABC’s founding host of Insiders Barrie Cassidy has flagged his retirement from the program in June.

Cassidy said it was “time to give someone else a go” at the Sunday morning politics program he has hosted for 18 years.

The announcement was made the Quill Awards in Melbourne where Cassidy was awarded the Melbourne Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I want to keep contributing in some way — hopefully in a substantial way. And only recently I’ve come to the conclusion that while I’m on Insiders I’ll never precisely know what that will involve,” Cassidy said.

“I do want to do other things before I run out of motivation and energy. So I’ve decided to leave insiders in June after 18 years that really is long enough”.

Cassidy said he will be involved in the election campaign and “a few programs after that”. “Then I plan to take a break and reboot”.
