Private equity firm Oryx Global Partners has tapped former Fortescue Metals boss Elizabeth Gaines as its senior adviser, as it launches a new resources fund and gets set to open an office in Australia.

DataRoom also understands BHP’s former chief technical officer and Adriatic Metals boss Laura Tyler has been appointed as a partner.

Ms Gaines previously worked as Helloworld’s chief executive before being appointed chief executive of Fortescue in 2017, succeeding Nev Power.

She started at Fortescue as a director and also served as CFO before taking the top job.

London and Abu-Dhabi-based Oryx will capitalise on surging demand for raw materials driven by global electrification and decarbonisation efforts, and the growing need for diversification and security of mineral supply chains.

The appointments come as private capital is playing an increasingly important role in ensuring the supply of strategic and critical minerals.

Oryx is expected to hire additional local executives, as it opens an office in Australia and makes its first investment in the region.
