James Packer-backed Crown Resorts has joined the The Star Entertainment Group in agreeing to pay most stood-down casino workers for the next two weeks.

Star on Wednesday revealed that 90 percent of its 9000 staff would be stood down after it shut its casino, food and beverage and convention operations.

Crown is expected to soon reveal what proportion of the 18500 staff employed at its Melbourne and Perth facilities will be stood down.

This agreement on pandemic pay comes after days of discussions with United Workers Union representatives and delegates and ensures thousands of casino workers at Star Sydney, Gold Coast and Treasury casinos as well as Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth will keep getting paid for another fortnight during the coronavirus crisis.

At Star, full and part time workers will be paid based on the hours they would have worked in this period and casual workers who lost all work last week will now receive 16 hours pay for two weeks.

At Crown part time payments are being based on average hours worked over a fortnight, and the casual payment will be $1000.

Dario Mujkic, United Workers Union Casinos Director said, “This is a great result for thousands of United Workers Union members and will provide some short-term relief at a time of crisis for many.

“Star undertook to provide a payment on Monday, with final details confirmed today, while Crown agreed to a payment yesterday afternoon.

“We commend both Star and Crown for their decisions and for moving quickly to assist workers.

“We don’t know of any other employers that have made a commitment to their workers of this scale right now. These are the kinds of decisions we need from big employers right now.

“All casino operators should be focusing on looking after their employees right now, both emotionally and financially, by providing ongoing income for them during this crisis.”
