Twelve international airlines are being pitted against each other in a capacity contest designed to ensure full aircraft travelling from Asia to Australia.

The Airline Marketplace is an industry-first concept pioneered by Tourism Australia to boost capacity through competitive airfares at out-of-peak times.

At the online marketplace, travellers in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and India will be able to check out discount fares on offer from airlines such as Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Garuda and British Airways.

Tourism Australia managing director John O’Sullivan said the Airline Marketplace concept originally was used in India, where it had been successful.

The most recent campaign in June delivered nearly 16,000 bookings for the airlines, a rise of 20 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

“This will be the first time we’ve extended the concept across the whole region and off the back of our new $10 million UnDiscover campaign,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We’re expecting to see strong results.”

The campaign promotes Australia’s lesser known attractions.
