AirAsia has put Australian airports on notice that it is keen to add more routes to its schedule, at the right price.

The Southeast Asian-based low-cost carrier will become the first overseas airline to fly out of Avalon in December, after transitioning from Tullamarine.

An AirAsia spokesman said lower costs were the key to lower fares, and any airport willing to “break the norm and offer lower costs” would be of interest to the airline.

The carrier is understood to be planning to reinstate its Adelaide service, and a Brisbane-Southeast Asian route may also be on the cards.

Other cities in the mix include Cairns and Newcastle along with the new Western Sydney Airport when it is built in the next decade.

AirAsia currently operates out of Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Perth and Sydney.

High-profile owner Tony Fernandes is expected to confirm any new routes when he travels to Australia for the inaugural Avalon service on December 5.
