Atlassian co-founders top latest young rich list

Atlassian co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar top the latest Young Rich List with a combined net worth of $6.08 billion.

It’s the sixth consecutive year the software company duo have taken out the top two spots in the list of Australia’s 100 richest people aged 40 and under.

Atlassian shares on the US Nasdaq exchange surged after the company beat earnings expectations in its quarterly report earlier this month.

Their fortune accounted for nearly half of the $13.2bn combined total of the 100 young people listed.

The co-founders of web marketing business Campaign Monitor, Dave Greiner and Ben Richardson, came in at third and fourth place on the list. The pair have a combined net worth of $607 million.

Melbourne property developer Tim Gurner took out the fifth spot with a $465m fortune.

Others included in the top 10 were Owen Kerr, founder of online foreign exchange broker Pepperstone, real estate technology creator Ori Allon and Sydney entrepreneur Sam Prince, the owner of Mexican fast food chain Zambrero. Husband and wife duo and co-founders of online graphic marketplace Envato, Collis and Cyan Ta’eed, came in at No 9 and No 10 with combined wealth of $216m.

The technology sector generated the most young wealth, with 38 people on this year’s list making their fortune from the sector. The financial services sector generated 12 young rich Australians. Eight on the list came from the retail sector.

The total wealth of the people on the Young Rich List reached a record $13.2bn, up from $12.3bn last year, boosted by the booming property and technology sectors. The average net worth rose to $132m, up from $123m a year ago.

Nine women made the list this year, up from eight last year. Canva CEO Melanie Perkins came in at No 17 on the list with $128m and model Miranda Kerr was ranked No 62 with a net worth of $44m. In May Ms Kerr married billionaire Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel.

Fitness guru Kayla Itsines jumped 11 places to No 40 with shared wealth of $46m.

Twenty-seven people made the list for the first time, up from 22 last year.

Global fitness and health star Emily Skye was among the debutants at No 83 with wealth at $32m.

Airtasker co-founders Tim Fung and Jonathan Lui also made the list for the first time with a combined wealth of $41m, making them No 66 and No 67 on the list.

The co-founders of online tooth whitening company Hi­Smile, Nik Mirkovic and Alex Tomic, were the youngest debutants at 22 and 24. The pair ranked 58 and 59 on the list, with a combined net worth of $46m.

The list records Australia’s wealthiest self-made citizens aged 40 and under.
