Sydney Local Health District offers Pfizer coronavirus jabs to people under 40
There has been a massive change to Sydney’s Pfizer roll out, with the coveted jab now available to thousands more young people.
Young people in parts of central Sydney have been made eligible for Pfizer jabs against coronavirus.
The Sydney Local Health District confirmed it had opened up vaccination appointments for people aged between 16 and 39.
That opportunity is available even to people who live in parts of the health district that aren’t designated coronavirus hotspots.
The Sydney LHD covers much of the city’s inner west, and some suburbs in the inner city as well.
The LHD has told residents to check if their postcode is on a list of accepted ones before trying to make a booking.
Eligible people can then book their appointment online.
About 70 per cent of NSW’s coronavirus cases are people aged under 40, NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant has said.
Dr Chant said the areas in Sydney worst hit by the outbreak had a “younger age profile”, which contributed to so many young people being affected.
Those areas also had larger household sizes than the rest of the city and more often had multiple generation of the same family living under one roof, she told a parliamentary hearing on Monday.
“Clearly the picture with Delta is that once it’s introduced to a household, it’s inevitable that everyone gets the Delta strain,” Dr Chant said on Monday.
Getting vaccinated against coronavirus has been proven to dramatically reduce the risk of serious illness and death, and can even lessen one’s chance of catching the virus and spreading it to others.
