Pro-Palestine rally in Sydney marks 21st week of protests since Israel-Gaza War
Pro-Palestine supporters have marched peacefully through Sydney, hours after protesters were arrested at Mardi Gras.
Thousands of pro-Palestine supporters have marched peacefully through the streets of Sydney, hours after Mardi Gras was interrupted by a small group of protesters.
The Pro-Palestine demonstration marked the 21st week of protests in Sydney, with protesters ending their march at Hyde Park on Sunday.
Palestine flags, including a massive flag which required multiple people to carry during the march, were seen being flown proudly as those gathered listened on to organisers at the event.
The demonstration, organised by a Sydney-based Palestine Action Group, was aimed at supporting Palestine in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.
Thousands showed their support once more by joining the protest, with “free Palestine” chants echoing across the crowd.
The peaceful protest comes after chaotic scenes were sparked at Saturday’s Mardi Gras parade when pro-Palestine protesters stormed the street, metres from the NSW Premier.
NSW Police have since charged at least eight people following the incident.
Shocking video from Saturday’s march showed police wrestle a large banner reading ‘queer solidarity with Palestinian resistance’ from a woman from a pro-Palestinian protest group.
The footage shows the woman appearing to pass a flare to someone watching on from behind the metal fencing set up along the route.
She then moved toward the middle of the street, before four officers managed to move her back to the fence.
