Crowds flock to Bronte Beach as authorites issue mask warning ahead of them becoming compulsory outdoors across Sydney

Residents flocked to Sydney’s beaches today, including people sunbaking, as fears continue about a nearby recent superspreader event.

Residents have flocked to eastern suburbs beaches on Sunday to soak up the warm weather, however police have warned residents to be mindful of social distancing in the wake of a recent nearby superspreading party.

Pictures captured by NCA Newswire showed throngs of people taking in the sunshine as temperatures hovered around the mid-20s all day.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted rain for most of this week, including the next two days.

While everyone pictured appeared to be social distancing, authorities are still urging vigilance, especially in light of a superspreader event at nearby Maroubra earlier in the month.

The state recorded 830 new cases on Sunday amid the latest outbreak which has seen the introduction of a statewide lockdown.

From Monday, the NSW government has mandated new rules which state face masks must be worn outside at all times, except while exercising.

NSW Police deputy commissioner Gary Worboys denied suggestions that the rules were confusing and urged caution among the community.

“In terms of exercising, people do not have to wear a mask,” he said.

“But when you are exercising in a place where there are crowds of people or where you think you will end up in a situation where people will be close by, it is just common sense that you would put that mask on.

“You have to carry (a mask) so if you feel that your safety, if you feel that people are too close, why not put that mask on?”

NSW Health last week said that an illegal gathering at Maroubra has been revealed as a superspreader event.

On Saturday, authorities said 16 cases had attended a party in the beachside suburb on August 14, with a number of them spreading the virus onto close contacts.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said up to 60 people attended the party in Sydney’s east and expressed fury at those defying strict health orders across the state.
